Judy Murray was the guest of honour at a special tea party on Tuesday as she launched a charity fundraiser with two serving soldiers.
The mother of Scotland’s best-loved tennis player tucked into some refreshments when she joined Sergeant Stephanie Sanderson and Lance Corporal Amy Sutherland, of Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland at the unveiling of Poppyscotland’s Tea & Toast event.
The fundraiser has been inspired by the military tradition of having a cup of tea and a slice of toast at break times.
People across the country are invited to throw a tea party with their family and friends to mark Armed Forces Day on Saturday, June 27.
Ms Murray, 55, said she was thrilled to have opened the event at The Royal Yacht Britannia and encouraged the public to get involved.
She added: “Poppyscotland needs to raise money all year round to support the Armed Forces community and Tea & Toast offers a simple but fabulous way to do exactly that.”
This year’s fundraiser will include other British traditions such as cream tea and a glass of fizz.
Hosts can either price their refreshments or offer them for free while guests make a donation to the charity.
Marianne Craig, Poppyscotland’s events fundraiser, said: “Tea & Toast offers an ideal way for people to get together and show their support for Scotland’s Armed Forces community.
“It’s such a versatile concept but, plain or fancy, the important thing is that people are having fun and raising vital funds.”
Bob Downie, chief executive of The Royal Yacht Britannia, said: “We are delighted to get behind this fantastic campaign and host the launch of Tea and Toast for Poppyscotland.”
“Over 3,000 Royal Yachtsmen proudly served aboard Britannia during her 44 years in service and, to this day, they return every year to spend a week working with Britannia’s Maintenance crew.”
Poppyscotland uses money to support member of the Armed Forces as well as funding services in housing mental health and mobility.
