The mother of murdered schoolboy Kriss Donald yelled with delight this afternoon as one of his racist killers had his time behind bars increased.
Daanish Zahid was jailed for a minimum of 17 years for his part in the brutal killing of the 15-year-old a decade ago.
But this afternoon he was back in the dock at the High Court in Glasgow, where he admitted lying to appeal judges to try and free Imran ‘Baldy’ Shahid – the ringleader of the mob who abducted and murdered Kriss in 2004.
The 31-year-old told an appeal court that Shadid was “innocent” and that another Glasgow-based Asian gang was behind the crime.
He claimed he had been threatened into silence, and then revealed a string of texts supposedly naming the real culprits.
But judges dismissed his evidence – while also throwing out Shahid’s appeal – before ordering an investigation into the lies.
Today the criminal court heard Zahid had testified that Shahid had been an “unwilling accomplice” to the murder, and that it had been committed by another Asian gang.
He claimed the other mob had threatened him into pinning the blame on Shahid.
Defence agent Susan Duff told the court her client had pleaded guilty to attempting to defeat the ends of justice to spare Kriss’s family the pain of another trial.
She said: “At the age of 31, he can see the pain and distress he caused the Donald family.
“They have to live with that every day. He did not want to add to their distress.
“He has asked me to convey his deep sorrow and regret.”
Kriss’s emotional mum, Angela, who was in court for the sentencing, was heard to say “No chance”.
Lord Kinclaven jailed Zahid for another six years, which will begin at the end of his current sentence – meaning it could be 2027 before he is eligible for release.
Ms Donald screamed “yes” as the sentence was passed, before adding: “Hope you die in jail”.
Kriss was snatched on March 15, 2004 near his Pollokshields home.
The teenager was taken on a terrifying 200-mile journey before being stabbed 13 times and set on fire.
Shahid was seeking revenge after earlier being assaulted – despite Kriss being totally blameless.
Shahid was jailed for 25 years after he was convicted in 2006, along with his brother Zeeshan and Mohammed Mustaq. Zahid was convicted at an earlier trial.
