The families of two missing Fife fishermen have been told that human remains have been found.

Jason Buchan and David Stead have been missing for a week after their boat capsized near East Wemyss.

Partial human remains have now been discovered on two separate beaches in St Andrews.

A walker made the first grim discovery on a beach in St Andrews at about 11.30am yesterday.

The second was found today on East Sands at about 10am.

Chief Inspector Adrian Annandale, area commander for Levenmouth, said: “We are currently investigating two separate discoveries of what appears to be partial human remains.

“Family liaison officers have informed the relatives of two men reported missing from East Wemyss on Monday, August 10 and will continue to maintain contact with them throughout our investigation.

“A detailed forensic examination of both items is now underway.

“Police are continuing with searches and specialist divers from Police Scotland’s marine unit were deployed to the East Wemyss area over the weekend.”

Mr Buchan, 35, and Mr Stead, 47, went missing after their 10ft fishing boat capsized in the Firth of Forth shortly before 5pm last Monday.

A third man, Birrell Stewart, 30, was pronounced dead after being picked up from the water later that day.
