Scottish Secretary David Mundell has urged the SNP government in Edinburgh to focus on its “day job”.
On the eve of a visit to Aberdeen he said people were “officially fed up” hearing about a second independence referendum.
Scotland’s only Tory MP is in the city to discuss the Syrian refugee situation with local authorities and meet representatives of the oil and gas sector.
He referred to The Press and Journal-commissioned independent poll, published last week, which found 69% of people were opposed to holding a second referendum on independence.
“We made our view on independence clear last year and now we want to get on with our lives,” he said.
“People in all parts of the north-east and the Highlands are uninterested in a second referendum.
“They don’t want to hear Scottish Government ministers banging on about independence.
“They are much more concerned about local schools, hospital waiting times and what Police Scotland are up to in their area.
“This is what matters to people and it is now time for the Scottish Government to get on with their day job.”
