Former Scottish secretary Alistair Carmichael will learn his fate today as judges issue their written decision on the legal challenge to his election.
Four of the Northern Isles MP’s constituents raised a petition against him, claiming he misled voters and “acted dishonourably” in the run-up to the general election.
The hearing was held at a specially-convened election court in Edinburgh over three days earlier this year.
Giving evidence, Mr Carmichael expressed his “enormous” regret at his involvement, but denied lying about his role to protect his reputation.
The Lib Dem came under pressure to quit after admitting responsibility for leaking a memo written by a civil servant which suggested Nicola Sturgeon wanted David Cameron to win in May.
Following an investigation, Mr Carmichael, who had previously insisted he was unaware of the document, admitted he had allowed his special adviser Euan Roddin to release details of it.
