March’s cold snap will continue to grip the north and north-east this week but forecasters predict bright and sunny conditions today.
Following a cold and frosty night – with temperatures plunging as low as -9C in areas of the Scottish Highlands – today’s forecast is for widespread sunshine.
But winter is expected to bite back tomorrow with another blast of snow predicted.
John Mitchell, a Met Office forecaster in Aberdeen, said conditions would be mainly dry with sunny spells today.
“There will be a frost first thing but it will be a bright, sunny day for most of us,” he said.
“There will be one or two showers in the Peterhead area in the morning but it will brighten up later.
“And although it will be a cool start to the day, when the sun comes out, temperatures will reach 6C or 7C by the afternoon.
“In the sunshine it will feel quite warm.”
However, the weather is expected to take a turn for the worse tomorrow.
Mr Mitchell said: “On Tuesday, the weather starts to go downhill.
“It is going to be a fairly cloudy start with temperatures around freezing.
“There will also be a bit of snow on Tuesday morning, mostly on high ground, but there could also be a light dusting of snow for a time at low levels.
“It gets a bit better going into the afternoon with some dry and bright conditions.
“Temperatures will be around 7C by the afternoon.”
Mr Mitchell added: “We will see some snow showers and some reasonably cold conditions at night but during the day temperatures will be closer to average for the time of year.”
More rain is expected overnight into Wednesday but it will be a dry and bright day for most.
Another band of cloud and patchy rain will move in on Thursday, heralding milder conditions, with temperatures reaching around 9C or 10C during the day.
Friday will be mainly dry.
