A happy couple have spent their golden anniversary in the same hotel room they spent their wedding night 50 years ago – and for the same price.
Fraser and Anne Robb married on June 4, 1966, and spent their honeymoon night at the Old Waverley Hotel in Edinburgh.
And on Friday, they returned to the room to celebrate their anniversary – paying exactly the same price as they did 50 years ago.
Mr Robb said: “It was a wee bit strange coming back. We’ve been in two or three times for coffee but never stayed overnight since.
“The memories are flooding back. While we were here 50 years ago I took a picture of the Scott Monument out the window in black and white.”
In 1966 they paid four pounds and six shillings for their stay, enjoying a lavish dinner and bed and breakfast.
Nowadays, rooms cost around £130 a night at the Princes Street hotel, but staff kindly accepted old money which the couple had hung onto.
They also never threw away the receipt from their original stay.
And after finding it again at the bottom of a drawer a few months ago, Mr Robb thought he would “chance it” and see if the hotel would help them celebrate the milestone.
The 73-year-old said: “When I asked if they would do anything for our golden wedding, the manager offered us bed and breakfast for the same price we paid in 1966.
“I agreed and I’m even paying in old money – it’s great.”
They went for dinner and for a few drinks before enjoying their overnight stay in the hotel and breakfast the next morning.
The couple met at the Burma Ballroom in Kirkcaldy before getting married at the Normand Road Church in Dysart on the outskirts of the town, six years later.
They still live in Kirkcaldy and now have two daughters and two grandchildren.
Leon Kiteley, general manager of the hotel, said: “We were delighted when Mrs and Mr Robb contacted us to make their booking.
“A 50th anniversary is a massive milestone so we are so happy that we can make it even more special for them.
“After 50 years we are thrilled we were able to book them into the same room that they spent their wedding night in, in 1966 and Mr Robb being able to find old money from prior to 1966 was fantastic.”
