A Scottish man has died in Bali after a tragic swimming accident during a holiday for a family wedding.
Vishal Chopra was with family and friends when he got into difficulties.
Nearby surfers and holidaymakers came to his aid but the 42-year-old died shortly after.
It is not yet known what led to the death of the Glaswegian accountant but the incident is believed to have taken place around lunchtime on Wednesday.
Relatives said that Vishal – who was of Indian descent – was a decent swimmer and that no alcohol had been involved before his death.
Describing him as “extremely popular, intelligent and much loved”, his family were yesterday making preparations to bring his body home.
Close family friend Munish Sharma was on his way to Bali to join the celebration when he heard the news.
He told the Daily Record: “We are all devastated by this. Vishal was an absolutely fabulous human being, one of the most genuine people you will ever meet.
“His family meant everything to him and we are all in pieces at this tragedy. The world has lost an absolute gem.
Golfing pal Austin Barrett was also devastated. He said: “Vish had an aura, a serenity even, that you just don’t see very often. He was intelligent, funny and honourable – the best guy to be around. I will remember him always, smiling and laughing.
“Our group of friends will never be the same again.”
