John McKinstry, 31, was taking a walk along the banks of the River Doon when he spotted the rhea, a close relative of the ostrich, on the other side. But the bird sprinted away as soon as it spotted John and so far remains at large in the countryside near Patna, East Ayrshire. John, a tree surgeon, was enjoying a stroll along the river when he spotted the runaway bird on Sunday morning. He said: “I do a lot of fishing but as you can’t do it on a Sunday, I took a walk down to see the water, just minding my own business.
