Arctic air prompts first Scottish snow gate closure of the season

A wave of cold air from the Arctic has arrived in Scotland, prompting the first snow gate closure of the season.

Police have confirmed that the A939 between Cock Bridge and Tomintoul has been blocked because of heavy snowfall.

The B974 Cairn O’Mount road has also been shut for similar reasons.

A yellow weather warning is in place throughout the north and north-east until 11am tomorrow morning.

The Met Office has forecast hail, sleet and snow for large parts of north Scotland.

A spokesman said: “Hail, sleet and snow showers will leave surfaces prone to patchy ice, together with slushy snow over some upland routes.”
