A north-east high street reopened to traffic for the first time in 15 years yesterday.
Peterhead’s Chapel Street was closed to vehicles in 2001 as part of an effort to regenerate the ailing town centre.
But it has welcomed motorists back after the bid to improve footfall was unsuccessful.
The local authority has said the move will help rejuvenate the town and will initially be trialled for up to two years.
Parking restrictions have been introduced on the cobbled stretch of road, in addition to a 20mph speed limit. Bollards have also been installed along the edge of the footpaths for the public’s safety.
Philip McKay, the council’s roads chief, confirmed his team would now “monitor” the traffic changes during the trial period.
He said: “With the changes that have been made, I urge all road users, particularly pedestrians, to exercise additional caution when using Chapel Street, following the reintroduction of all traffic.
