Pedestrians and motorists are being urged to take extra care on the roads after a number of serious incidents in recent weeks.
Michal Podgorski, 30, died after he was hit by a grey Renault Megane on the A947 Aberdeen to Banff road, between the Stoneywood roundabout and Mugiemoss Road about 12.30am on November 3.
And Steve Westwood, head chef at the Newmachar Hotel, was left in a critical condition after he was struck walking along the same road just north of the village at about 4.30am on October 20.
With the arrival of winter weather, police are urging walkers and drivers to be extra vigilant.
Sergeant Colin Matheson said: “With the darker mornings and early evenings at this time of year, along with poorer weather and visibility, it is time for all road users to be more careful.
“Pedestrians need to be aware that it may be more difficult for drivers to see them. They should avoid the dangers of being distracted by using mobile ‘phones. When walking on unlit or poorly lit roads they should wear light coloured clothing or ideally something reflective so they can be seen by drivers. They should also face the flow of traffic so they can see and react to oncoming vehicles.
“Motorists too must avoid being distracted by mobile phones and devices. They can also play their part by being alert to pedestrians and respecting their right of way keeping in mind that pedestrians have the same right to share the road space”.
