More traffic chaos is expected in the north of the city today as a further road closure is imposed to allow for work on the new AECC to continue.
The western carriageway of the A96 beween Dyce Drive and Airport Road is expected to be shut for the next 10 weeks.
A contraflow has been set up on the eastern stretch for motorists travelling in both directions.
The move is potentially the last in a string of planned closures as part of construction work on the £333million new Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre at Bucksburn.
Motorists previously faced lengthy delays from the closure of Dyce Drive in October.
While initially scheduled to last two weeks, several delays caused the works to extend into December.
However, today’s contraflow is expected to be the final measure of its kind in the area ahead of the centre’s opening next year.
Contractor Robertson Major Projects expects it to be lifted by April, with no further closures needed afterwards.
Ward councillor Avril MacKenzie said: “I think, historically, people forget how bad it was before the new road beside the airport opened.
“Prior to that it was normal for tailbacks as far back as the police station at Bucksburn.
“Robertsons has said that this will be the last closure so I hope that it is.
“I do have to say the company has been good at trying to keep everybody up to speed on the AECC and the road closures.”
A Robertson Major Projects spokeswoman said: “We would encourage commuters to allow for increased travel time, in order to minimise disruption to their schedules.”
The AECC, which will have a maximum capacity of 12,500, is due to open next year.
During its first decade in operation, the facility is expected to attract 4.5million visitors boosting the city’s economy by £113million.
The 150 acre site is also expected to bring more than 350 full-time equivalent jobs to the city by 2029.
