Network Rail workers have successfully completed the first phase of railway signal improvements between Aberdeen and Stonehaven.
Engineers worked from Saturday night to yesterday to install new LED signals and axle-counters on the route, and de-commission the signal box at Newtonhill.
Control of the signalling section has been relocated to Aberdeen.
The work comes ahead of train timetable changes coming into place in May, and Network Rail said it will allow trains to move between Aberdeen and Stonehaven more safely and efficiently.
The signal work is part of a wider £13.5 million improvement project between Aberdeen and Stonehaven.
Matthew Spence, route delivery director for Network Rail said: “Completing these works is an important milestone for the industry, as it unlocks additional capacity required for the introduction of new services in May, as well as for future developments of services in the north-east.
“Aberdeen’s rail network is seeing huge levels of investment that will help to create more opportunities for commuting and leisure travel, and help grow the economy, putting passengers and freight users first.”
