Calls for improvements at A90 junction after spate of accidents

After a spate of accidents, drivers have called on authorities to improve conditions at a north-east junction.

Police have closed lanes on the B967 Fordoun junction on the A90 near Laurencekirk four times over the last two weeks.

Last week, motorists faced lengthy delays after two cars – a black Vauxhall Astra and a blue Ford Fiesta – crashed.

The following day, four cars were involved in a crash. No-one was injuried.

On social media, Jimmy McGouldrick, from Upper Powburn, appealed to the police, council and to Transport Scotland.

He wrote: “Four major accidents at same junction in last two weeks.

“This needs assessed urgently. Try getting across these junctions. It’s terrifying.”

He added that better lighting would be “a start” in improving safety at the junction.

Aberdeenshire Council acknowledged the concerns of drivers and, while they are not responsible for trunk roads, did say “we are happy to receive suggestions on improvements to our roads network which should be directed to our local roads teams.”

Transport Scotland said they were no immediate plans to carry out works at the junction, and that they had no records of injuries caused as a result of accidents there.

A spokesman said: “We installed average speed cameras on the A90 between Dundee and Stonehaven two years ago and introduced additional signage to highlight the 50mph limit that applies locally.

“There are no plans for further investment, including street lighting, at this location.”
