Highland representatives have welcomed a significant boost to road safety in Inverness with work scheduled to commence on the installation of two controlled crossings on the A82.
Work to create the signalised puffin crossings will begin today following a successful campaign for improved road safety measures in the area.
The £130,000 project is being delivered by Transport Scotland and Bear Scotland with works due for completion by March.
Inverness west councillor Bill Boyd welcomed the progression of the long overdue improvements.
He said: “This is good news for parents and young children going to school as well as shoppers and theatregoers. Although it has taken a while to get to this point, we have a good solution.
“These developments on the A82 will work in tandem with active travel projects along the Ness, making safer road crossing for city residents, businesses and visitors.”
The first phase of the works will be conducted between Glenurquhart Road and Smith Avenue near the Scotmid store, with completion expected early next month.
Engineers will remain on site for a further five weeks as the second phase of upgrades at the Montague Row Junction get underway.
Temporary traffic lights will remain in place throughout the works, followed by a 10mph convoy system during the installation process.
Veteran road safety campaigner, David Stewart congratulated local campaigners on their dedication to the cause.
The MSP said: “Local campaigners who contacted me have to be congratulated for pressing for these crossings and I’m really grateful to Transport Scotland for listening.”
