Black Isle community councils have revealed they are furious that action to mitigate the dangerous A9/B9161 Munlochy junction is being ‘kicked down the road’.
Transport Scotland is commissioning a traffic study on the junction, and a road safety consultation was launched yesterday by MSP Kate Forbes.
But the community representatives say there is ample data already available and ten weeks after a fatal accident at the junction, politicians are merely ‘talking a good game.’
The councils have met to thrash out a range of proposals which they say would be an immediate and inexpensive solution to alleviate the danger.
John Stott of Knockbain community council said the Black Isle Community Council Group has written to Transport Scotland with a range of measures for immediate implementation.
He said: “We have had no reply.
“We want to see a 50mph zone half a mile either side of the junction north & south bound and the closure of the right turn onto the A9 northbound from the junction.
“We also want the immediate repair of the ‘queuing traffic sign’ on the A9 northbound and adequate lighting at the junction.
“These would be non-expensive solutions to alleviate the dangers.”
A Transport Scotland spokeswoman said: “We will be commissioning a study in the near future to consider the safety and operation of the junctions on this section of the A9, and Munlochy junction will be included in this.
“Any options emerging from this study will be subject to further analysis, consultation and prioritisation alongside other safety schemes in the North West Unit.”
