Landslip causing major disruption to Highland railway services

Flooding on the West Highland Line
Flooding on the West Highland Line

Rail passengers are experiencing disruption following a landslip on the West Highland Line.

Alterations have been made to services between Glasgow Queen Street, Oban and Mallaig with the line currently closed due to the landslip between Glenfinnan and Lochailort.

Engineers have been sent to fix the problem that has been ongoing since 12.30pm. It is expected that disruption will continue until late tomorrow evening.

The damage was caused due to excessive flooding following rainfall in the area.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “The line between Fort William and Mallaig is currently closed due to a landslip beneath the track near Lochailort.

“We have specialist engineers on-site assessing the damage to the track and putting plans in place to repair and reopen the line.

“A significant amount of ballast and other supporting material has been washed out from under the track and it is too early to confirm exact timescales for reopening the line.”

A fire service spokeswoman said: “We received a call at 11.40am from police to provide assistance with a water rescue near Glenfinnan.

“Crews from Mallaig and Fort William were sent, however, were stood down after arriving.”

A coastguard crew was also called to the incident, a statement said: “We were called after flood water had damaged a garage of a property and had also damaged Glenfinnan Bridge.

“We were stood down by the fire brigade after it was established they had enough crew.

“The incident has been handed into the control of Network Rail.”

Train services between Glasgow Queen Street and Mallaig will be terminated at Fort William. All stations between Fort William and Mallaig will not be served.
