Train travellers face three consecutive weekends of disruption on the Inverness-Perth line.
Network Rail will be carrying out work at various locations which will mean rerouting and some services being replaced with buses.
Both East Coast and Scotrail trains will be affected on October 4, 5, 12, and 19 as essential winter preparation work is carried out.
Some passengers will complete their journeys by bus from stations between Inverness and Perth, while some will face a major detour via Aberdeen.
A spokesman for Network Rail said: “We will be undertaking track renewal, rock netting and vegetation clearance works around the Carrbridge, Kingussie and Slochd sections of the line over the weekend of October 4-5 and then on Sundays October 12 and 19.
“The works are vital preparations for winter when severe weather can dislodge stones and fell trees on to the line.
“We carried out similar works worth £2milllion last October and November on the line, and these works are of a similar value.
“This will mean a bus service between Perth and Inverness with services to Glasgow and Edinburgh diverting via Aberdeen.”
An East Coast spokesman added that a bus would also replace the train between Inverness and Perth, on the 7.55am Inverness-London King’s Cross service on Mondays 6, 13, and 20.
Residents have also been told they will be unable to access the recycling centre in Kingussie on October 4 and 5.
A spokeswoman for Highland Council said: “The centre will be temporarily closed due to essential maintenance work to a nearby level crossing that Network Rail will be carrying out.
“From 9.30pm on October 3, until 7am on October 6, maintenance work will be underway to the Ruthven Road Kingussie level crossing which will require the closure of part of the B970 Kingussie to Speybridge road.
“The nearest alternative site is the Aviemore recycling centre which will be open on October 4, between 9am and 4pm.”
