Police have revealed that five people have been caught drink driving across the north-east this past weekend.
The police have been carrying out vehicle checks as part of an ongoing campaign – operation Cedar – aimed at encouraging drivers to take more responsibility on the roads.
The campaign has been praised by Fraserburgh safety group chairman, and local councillor, Brian Topping.
Last night, he said: “I think it’s a very good and worthwhile scheme. It should make all drivers aware that safety is very important.
“This keeps drivers on their toes because Police Scotland could stop them at any time. The operation is very good and useful, especially if it catches drink drivers that could cause death on the road.
“It’s thrown up some results that are quite worrying, but I’m sure it will make other pedestrians and road users feel a lot safer.”
The five incidents took place in Fraserburgh, Elgin, Dufftown, Ballindalloch and the Tomnavoulin areas.
Road policing inspector Ewan Innes said that the incidents were “extremely disappointing” and showed that people were still to gamble their lives and the lives of others.
He said: “There is never a safe limit to drink and drive and so we suggest that if you are driving, you do not consume alcohol.
“During the winter months, with dark nights and lower temperatures, there is a high risk of drivers being involved in a collision and my advice would be do not increase this further by taking risks.
“In rural areas, it may seem easier to get behind the wheel after having a drink but it really isn’t worth the risk. For the sake of your safety and that of other road users, plan ahead and nominate a driver for the night.”
The police have already committed to carry on vehicle stops and speak to drivers about their behaviour on the road.
