New aerial drone footage has revealed the full scale of the completed work on the long-awaited Haudagain roundabout improvement scheme.
The roundabout has long been one of the north-east’s most notorious bottlenecks, but earlier this week the new link road bypassing the roundabout finally opened.
It marks the end of the £49.5 million revamp designed to relieve congestion in the north of the city.
What work has been done?
Around 180ft of carriageway has been built and this opened on Monday linking North Anderson Drive directly to Auchmill Road, bypassing the Haudagain roundabout.
More than 130 properties were demolished to make way for this new section of road.
Ground was first broken back in 2017, but delay after delay plagued construction.
The impact of the pandemic, supply chain issues, storms and a burst gas pipe all contributed to the initial opening date in 2021 being pushed back again and again.
Transport Minister Jenny Gilruth addressed the delays at Monday’s opening ceremony: “I know there have been delays to the completion of this project, which has been understandably frustrating for the local community.
“The contractors did suffer from staff shortages due to the impact of the Omicron variant at the turn of the year and I am hopeful the community will now welcome the project’s completion.
“I was delighted to cut the ribbon to open this new road, allowing the local community and road users of Aberdeen to start enjoying the benefits that it will bring to the north-east.”
