Moray is set to be hit with further snowfall this morning while the chances of a white Christmas have not been ruled out by forecasters.
A Met Office severe weather warning for snow and ice will remain in place today, having been in place since Thursday.
Drivers in Grampian have been asked to remain cautious due to the icy conditions.
Drifting snow and high winds kept an alert on the A93 Braemar to Blairgowrie road around Glenshee, which remained “passable with care” yesterday.
This morning, temperatures were set to drop to below freezing in Moray, with snow expected to fall most heavily in Tomintoul, Aberlour and Grantown-on-Spey.
Sleet and snow could also move into Keith, Lossiemouth, Elgin and Fochabers today.
The highest regions of Moray will see snowfalls of between 2-4cm, while areas above 400m will see between 5-10cm.
Met Office spokeswoman, Laura Young, said: “You have got some snow falling on the higher ground. There will be problems of ice overnight tonight.
“It is going to get quite low in temperatures. There will be quite a bit of sleet around.
“Lossiemouth and Forres could see some sleet overnight, while Aberlour, Grantown-on-Spey and Inverurie, these places are going to see showers. There are some dry places as well.”
Despite this the weather is set to clear later on today, with rain more likely in regions of Grampian than snow or sleet.
Ms Young said there will be a “bright start to the morning” in some parts of Grampian today, with a warm air mass moving into the north-east and “good sunshine” predicted for towns such as Stonehaven.
Ms Young added: “Saying that Grantown-on-Spey and Aberlour will see snow.”
Higher regions will continue to see snowfall into the afternoon.
Ms Young added: “By lunch time most showers will be done. This leads to a really clear, bright day. It is windy so it will feel very cold. Some winds will be quite strong. It will be a bit overcast overnight on Saturday into Sunday.
“There’s a weather system moving from west to east so Forres could see some heavy rain on Sunday.”
Moray will begin to experience more “unsettled” weather next week.
Ms Young said the run-up to Christmas day there would be “typical winter weather”, including “a bit of a mix, snow, rain and sunshine.”
