A pedestrian crossing in the north-east’s biggest town is being upgraded as Aberdeenshire Council prepares to open a new headquarters.
The existing pelican crossing in Kirk Street in Peterhead town centre will be replaced with a puffin crossing, in line with current safety standards.
It will also be repositioned nearer to the town’s St Peter Street junction, close to the council’s new Buchan area office.
Work is scheduled to begin in mid-February and should take about three weeks to complete.
A spokeswoman for the local authority said: “The main difference is that there is no flashing amber light allowing motorists to proceed if the crossing is clear, which is safer for pedestrians.”
Council roads chief Philip McKay said: “The current Kirk Street pedestrian crossing is coming to the end of its useful life and has to be replaced.
“This work will allow us to both upgrade the crossing to allow for greater public safety and adjust its position to meet changing pedestrian needs.”
Today, members of the Buchan area committee will discuss what to officially call the new £5million HQ. The building, which is due to open in April, will house 200 council staff.
