The Scottish Government is taking action at an accident blackspot on the A90 after a car careered off the carriageway into a nearby house.
The grey Audi S5 came off the main Aberdeen to Dundee road at Newtonhill on Saturday, ploughing through a fence into three gardens in St Ternans Road before hitting the property.
Locals said it was the third time in recent years that a car had come to grief on that stretch of the busy trunk road and called for crash barriers to be erected.
Now Transport Scotland has revealed it is working with Bear Scotland on plans to bring in safety measures at the scene.
They will form part of an A90-wide safety study which will be published in March next year.
Newtonhill councillor Ian Mollision said action was needed immediately as residents lives were being put in danger.
He added: “It is good that they are undertaking that work, I welcome that. However that is quite a long time scale, who knows when the next accident could be.
“Here we have had three vehicles off the A90 crashing into the backs of gardens that I know of, so there is obviously something amiss here.
“There are a lot of pedestrians that walk along the A90 too. It is quite concerning.”
A Transport Scotland spokeswoman said: “We recognise the local concerns raised following the recent accident at Newtonhill.
“We have asked our operating company Bear Scotland to include this site in a forthcoming study to assess and identify roadside safety improvements on the A90.
“This study is due to be completed by the end of this financial year, and any recommended improvement works will be programmed for delivery thereafter”.
A Bear Scotland spokeswoman added: “We will be carrying out a safety study of this site on behalf of Transport Scotland and will recommend any required improvements thereafter.”
The two occupants of the Audi were not injured in Saturday’s crash.
One resident who witnessed it described it as being like “a scene from the movies”.
