Engineers were required to fix a fault with the signalling system at Aberdeen train station earlier this evening.
The fault resulted in delays for the Inverurie to Edinburgh service at 6.45pm, with passengers encouraged to board a train heading off an hour later.
Engineers arrived on the scene shortly after 7pm, the problem was quickly fixed and the delayed train has left Aberdeen.
Passengers who were delayed for more than half an hour are urged to visit the Scotrail website for vouchers towards the cost of a future journey.
A spokeswoman for Scotail said: “Due to signalling problems, services between Aberdeen and Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh were disrupted for around 40 minutes from 7pm tonight.
“We apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused.”
