Aberdeenshire Council is committed to creating dozens of new disabled-access parking spaces across the north-east.
Yesterday, members of the Buchan area committee signed off on plans to grant nearly 120 requests for disabled street parking orders.
The list of authorised disabled parking spaces is updated by the authority each year and Buchan residents can apply to have a space added near their home.
The move follows a similar list of applications in the Banff and Fraserburgh areas.
Following the unanimous decision of Buchan councillors to grant the latest raft of proposed addition to the list of disabled bays, groups including the police, community councils and the Road Haulage Association will be consulted.
A total of 118 new spaces will be added to the list – including 72 in Peterhead.
During yesterday’s meeting at Buchan House, independent councillor Norman Smith urged officers to use common sense when granting applications.
He said: “I’d like to make a plea that when you do this, some thought goes into it.
“I’ve had complaints about spaces being put directly opposite neighbours’ driveways.”
However, council roads manager Derek Murray claimed neighbours always had the opportunity to raise concerns about the placement of new disabled bays.
The estimated cost of implementing the parking orders – including adding new signs and white lines – is £2,000.
If any objections are made by police, community councils, Road Haulage Association or residents, the proposals will be brought back before the committee.
Otherwise, council officers are set to begin work on the new spaces immediately.
