A north-east community centre will host a family-friendly road safety event next month in an effort to save lives on local roads.
The combined fun day and road safety workshop at the Mintlaw and Central Buchan Initiative (Macbi) centre is part of an ongoing campaign to raise public awareness in the region.
Staff from the police, fire and rescue service, council and community safety groups will be on hand to give advice and practical demonstrations.
Local councillor Norman Smith said: “We want to do everything we can to get people along to the event. In the run up to the event last year there were five fatalities on the local roads, and there have been another two or three since then.
“The police, council and fire service are all sending officers to give advice and information.”
The organisers of the upcoming event are hoping to include a “crash live” demonstration of emergency crews cutting a casualty out from a wrecked vehicle.
Mr Smith added: “We’re also trying to reach out to young drivers of souped-up cars to come down to the safety event. We’ll be having prize draws.”
Family events which will accompany the safety drive at Macbi Centre include a visit from the Owl and the Pussycat wildlife team and a children’s assault course.
The fun day and road safety event will be held at the Macbi Centre on Newlands Road in Mintlaw on Saturday, August 13 between 10am-4pm. All are welcome and the event is free.
