A man carrying a knife has been arrested near Buckingham Palace, police have said.
Officers do not believe the incident is terror related.
It comes as Britain is put on red alert amid fears Manchester suicide bomber Salman Abedi may not have acted alone.
The man is believed to have been detained by police just moments before the Queen passed by in a car on her way to an engagement.
The man, wearing a green jacket and navy hooded top, was seen being detained by a number of officers on The Mall shortly after the incident.
Nearby, specialist police seized what is believed to be a large blade.
Earlier today Prime Minister Theresa May raised the threat level to ‘critical’, the highest possible rating, meaning that a further attack may be imminent.
The said a “wider group of individuals” could have been involved in the Manchester Arena blast rather than just Abedi.
At least 22 people were killed on Monday’s attack, including children, and more than 20 people remain in ‘critical care’.
