Alex Salmond will be set alight on top of an English bonfire tonight but he is far from the first political figure to be targeted by theĀ East Sussex bonfire community.

Each year tens of thousands of people take to the streets of Lewes while a number of committees create effigies for the events – with Tony Blair, George Bush and Angela Merkel amongst previous ‘guys’ to be burnt in the town.

Although the Lewes display has hit the headlines this year there are a number of other towns which host similar events – most notably in Battle, East Sussex where Sarah Palin and Barack Obama both featured as the race for the White House entered its final days in 2008.

Meanwhile, in Edenbridge, Kent, the designers appear to be less politically minded and have targeted a number of showbiz names, includingĀ Jonathan Ross, Russell Brand and Katie Price.
