A bonfire association has categorically denied that it blew up an effigy of Alex Salmond.
Photographs emerged online earlier on today that suggested a monstrous First Minister ‘guy fawkes’ created for the Lewes November 5 celebrations had definitely been destroyed.
But the saga took a twist again this afternoon when the Waterloo Bonfire Society insisted for a second time that the Salmond effigy was still intact.
A spokesman said it had evidence to prove that their creation had not been blown up.
“Contrary to reports from unknown sources, we re-confirm that the satirical Tableau of Alex Salmond was withdrawn from Waterloo Bonfires Society’s event last night and was not, and indeed was never intended to be, burned in effigy,” he said.
“We have confirmed to the authorities that we have evidence of this if required by them and indeed have today invited the Police to inspect the Tableau. The Police have informed us that they are satisfied that the Tableau was not burned at our event.
“We emphasise that there was no malicious intent or political motivation on the part of the Society.”
