A woman who died after being assaulted in London is thought to be the 17th person to be killed in a violent death in the UK already this year.
Scotland Yard said officers rushed to a property in Harrow, north west London after receiving reports of a serious assault shortly after midnight today.
The 34-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene and a man – also 34 – was arrested on suspicion of murder.
“At this early stage it is believed that the victim and the man arrested are known to each other,” police said.
A post-mortem will be held tomorrow.
Sixteen others have died in cases of suspected murder, manslaughter or arson across Britain since the new year began.
Forty-three-year-old Athens man Menelaos Aligizakis, who was visiting the UK over Christmas, was allegedly fatally attacked near Waterloo Station in the early hours of Saturday. A 29-year-old has been charged with murder and is currently before the courts.
Also in the capital, police have arrested three men on suspicion of murder after a 41-year-old man collapsed in the street in Southall late on Sunday night.
