A man wearing full camouflage clothing and apparently carrying a gun has caused alarm in a busy city centre.
Armed police were called to the Whitefriars area of Norwich – near the city’s law courts – at about 8.30am today. A helicopter was also deployed to help with the search.
Norfolk Police said it received a number of calls about the man but he did not seem to have carried out or threatened any attack.
Officers have now been stood down but police are trying to identify the man.
Chief Inspector Chris Spinks said: “Public safety is paramount and we take all reports of firearms seriously.
“This was a dynamic incident where a number of police resources were immediately deployed to carry out inquiries and conduct area searches.
“The man was not reported to be acting in a threatening way or making any threats to the public and we have had no further reports during the course of the operation.
“Our inquiries therefore now continue to identify this man and determine the nature of this incident.”
Anyone with further concerns should contact police on 101.
