Police evacuated nearby buildings after the fire broke out just before 9am at the Kard Bar poster and print shop in Cross Street. Tyne and Wear Fire Service said it was thought there were people on the upper floors of the building. Crews at the scene Police officers and eleven fire appliances are on the scene. Northumbria Police said Westgate Road, Clayton Road and Cross Street had been closed because of thick smoke. The fire service added the blaze had so far been confined to one building. Commuters and shoppers were being told to avoid the area.
