A Ministry of Defence spokesman has confirmed the Russian Tupolev TU 160 supersonic bombers are in the country’s “area of interest”. The jets, which are part of the UK’s quick reaction alert, were dispatched from the airforce’s Coningsby base, in Lincolnshire. The bombers are being escorted south across the North Sea. The UK’s airspace covers a 12-mile radius out from the UK coastline.
