London Fire Brigade have showed off their newest recruit in a cute video which shows a puppy – who found a single drop of lighter fluid in a ‘burned out building’.
Trainee detection dog Murphy impressed crowds at the fire station open day in Croydon by finding a tiny amount of fuel within seconds in a fire simulation.
Murphy’s trainer explains that Murphy can find fuel in a burned-out building, even after it has been dowsed with water.
He said: “Imagine if that had been inside a building and we had poured thousands and thousands of gallons of water in there.
“If people had poured petrol and lighter fluid, things like that around the building, you can see how little the dog can actually find.”
The young springer spaniel wore cute boots as he investigated the scent, which protect his paws from sharp objects on the floor after a fire.
Traditionally the London Fire Brigade take in dogs at one-year-old but their latest recruits are being trained from puppies.
