A fox cub has been rescued after being found with its head stuck in a peanut butter jar.
The three-week-old female cub, nicknamed Peanut, was heard banging against a gravestone at Salisbury Crematorium in Wiltshire.
Kevin Drew, 40, director of wildlife rescue organisation Creatures in Crisis, attended the scene with his son Callum, 16.
Mr Drew used wire cutters to remove the jar from the fox’s head while Callum held her in a towel.
Peanut is now recovering at the centre and is likely to be released back to the wild in three months’ time.
“We had a call reporting what may have been a kitten making noises in the cemetery over by the gravestones,” Mr Drew said.
“We attended the scene and there was a fox cub with its head stuck in a peanut butter jar, trying to lick the peanut butter out.
“The jar was stuck fast on its head. If we had been there any later it very well may have died. “
Mr Drew took the fox cub back to his home and used a pair of wire cutters to remove the jar.
“We are just glad it was a plastic jar and not glass,” Mr Drew, who works part-time in a supermarket, said.
“Once we got the jar off we were able to examine it and check that it didn’t need to go to the vet.
“We made sure there was no peanut butter residue on its head and took it to the centre.”
Peanut, who was rescued last week, is now recovering well and living with another female fox cub.
“We would urge people to wash their jars out before they recycle them or throw them away because it would stop these things happening again,” Mr Drew added.
