A 24-year-old woman has been killed after getting out of her car on a motorway following a minor crash.
The woman had been driving her Ford Fiesta on the M61 motorway early on Monday morning when she hit the central reservation.
The car became stuck so she left her vehicle to inspect the damage, when she was then struck by the passing lorry. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
Police are advising motorists to avoid the area but have asked the public to come forward with information.
The incident is understood to have taken place at around 3.30am near junction five of the north-bound motorway in Greater Manchester.
PC Paul Hailwood, of Greater Manchester Police, said: “I would like to extend my most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of this young woman.
“We currently have specially-trained officers working to provide them with any support they need at this tragic time.
“We are appealing for anybody with information to please come forward and contact police.”
They should call the GMP Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4742.
Highways England said the motorway was likely to remain closed for some time, and diversions are in place.
