Scottish Secretary David Mundell, who is backing Theresa May for the party leadership, said last night she would “hit the ground running”.
The Tory frontbencher insisted that in the current “serious situation”, the nation needed someone who could “hold their own on the world stage”, with experience and a proven track record.
He also said Mrs May had succeeded as home secretary, notoriously one of the most difficult jobs in government.
Mr Mundell added that she was “clearly committed” to keeping the UK together, highlighting her “significant” role during the Scottish independence campaign.
Asked about the fact the next PM would be a woman, he said it was very positive, but urged against complacency.
He said: “It demonstrates within the Conservative Party there isn’t a glass ceiling for women. We have a woman leader in Scotland.
“I think it should send out a very positive message that women can get to the top in politics, particularly in the Conservative party.
