Two passengers died at the scene and three others later died at hospital. The pilot was rescued by a passing tugboat and taken to hospital for observation. He has since been released. The Eurocopter AS350 was registered to Liberty Helicopters and had been chartered for a photo shoot. It crashed just north of Roosevelt Island at around 7pm local time. At a press conference, New York Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro called it a “great tragedy.” He said: “It took a while for the divers to get these people out. They worked very quickly, as fast as they could. That’s 50ft of water there.”
