The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) is encouraging local communities to band together to raise funds for survivors of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia.
An earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale rocked the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on September 28, triggering a terrifying tsunami that reached 18 feet in height and left a trail of destruction in its wake.
More than 1,900 people have died and hundreds of thousands of survivors are now in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
Workers have been on the ground in the aftermath providing essential aid and the DEC has said it hopes people back in the UK will be willing to do something in the community in support of the charity’s appeal.
A statement from the DEC said: “Organising a sponsored event, whether it’s a bake off, a walk to work or a gaming marathon, is a great way to help people affected by disasters.
Last week, an Indonesian woman living thousands of miles away in Speyside told the Press and Journal about her anxious wait to find out if her family survived the massive earthquake.
Evi Yuniariti was more than 7,500 miles away in Tomintoul when the quake hit the city of Palu.
