A Syrian hacking group has taken over news websites worldwide.
The organisation, dubbed The Syrian Electronic Army, has infiltrated online versions of British publications like OK Magazine, The Guardian and The Independent.
Major American news sites like CBC News have also been affected.
Users reported seeing a blank screen with a pop up window stating – “You’ve been hacked by the Syrian Electronic Army” – when they logged onto news websites.
It’s understood the hacks have been possible because of problems with a content-delivery network.
The Syrian Electronic Army is a state-sponsored group operating under Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria.
It has claimed responsibility for hacking sites since 2011.
