Shots were fired today after two suspects in the massacre at satirical French newspaper Charlie Hebdo stole a car and drove off.
French interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve said an operation was under way to detain the two brothers.
The operation took place this morning in Dammartin-en-Goele, about 25 miles north east of Paris.
Mr Cazeneuve spoke moments after an emergency meeting with the French president, prime minister and top police officials.
The two brothers, with al Qaida sympathies, stole a Peugeot this morning in the town of Montagny Sainte Felicite, about 30 miles north east of Paris.
Thousands of French security forces have mobilised to find the brothers after the attack on the Charlie Hebdo offices in Paris on Wednesday.
Police Swat teams have swarmed a region north of Paris, fearing a second strike by the suspects, who are described in a nationwide notice as “armed and dangerous”.
