Hooded gunmen open fire on French police in Marseille

Hooded gunmen have reportedly opened fire on police in the French city of Marseille.

Shots were heard in the Castellane area of the city this morning with witnesses saying they saw men armed with Kalashnikovs.

Tens of police officers are reported to have taken up position on a nearby roundabout.

7,000 residents living near to the shooting have been ordered to stay in their homes.

It is thought the shooting may be gang related.

The French Prime Minister is due to visit the city later today.
