A woman has been killed off the coast of Mexico after a whale smashed into the tourist boat she was travelling in.
Canadian Jennifer Carren was thrown from the boat into the water off Cabo San Lucas, on the Baja California peninsula, after the grey whale came up to surface.
The exact circumstances of the surfacing remain unclear with firefighters saying the whale jumped up and landed on the boat, throwing the victim into the water, whereas the boat owner said the woman was injured when the captain had to make a sudden turn to avoid the surfacing whale, which hit the side of the boat.
Two men, believed to be the boat’s captain and another tourist dived into the water to try to save the 35-year-old but she was pronounced at hospital.
Two other tourists were reportedly hurt but the extent of their injuries is unclear.
Grey whales can grow to a length of almost 15m (50ft) and a weight of 36 tonnes.
