Reports in America suggest that an “active shooter” is on the loose at a medical centre in San Diego.
Military authorities are responding to reported gunshots at a building on the campus of the Naval Medical Centre San Diego.
The sounds were heard at around 8am local time in Building 26, spokesman Mike Alvarez said.
The building houses offices and barracks for wounded sailors and marines as well as a gym.
Mr Alvarez said all non-emergency personnel have been asked to stay away from the area.
The post on the medical center’s Facebook page advised occupants to run, hide or fight. All non-emergency response staff were asked to stay away from the compound. The shooter was reported in building #26, the post said.
The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) confirmed that officials at NMCSD reported shots fired in the facility, but could not offer further details.
A staffer for the centre’s childcare base told NBC 7 the childcare area opens daily at 5.30am so there may be more than 200 children there right now.
A SWAT truck and a steady stream of patrol cars from multiple agencies, including the SDPD and Chula Vista Police Department, have been seen arriving at the area surrounding the military hospital.
