Well they’re almost here – the school holidays, that is. They’re a time when parents and grandparents desperately try to come up with ideas to keep the wee cherubs amused for more than five minutes.
There are certainly plenty of organised events happening throughout the North-east, which include the ever-popular summer clubs and schools.
Sadly though, many of them cost money and some are definitely not cheap.
It’s the time also, of course, for holidays abroad, or even breaks closer to home, with some tour operators and hotels taking the pressure off adults by looking after the youngsters with a variety of suitably named clubs.
The summer holidays usually mark the time when our warm months of May and June change to the rainy month of July.
That’s when the kids end up stuck at home playing a variety of expensive computer games they got for Christmas.
Who knows though, this summer could prove us all wrong and be absolutely wonderful -maybe even be the hottest on record.
Let’s face it though, we are a long way from the paradise weather of the Mediterranean, so we shouldn’t hold our breath.
Even a couple of weeks of good weather, without any rain, would be good and might stop the kids from getting cabin fever or even square eyes.
Of course, some lucky families will be jetting off to the sun but for those of you who are having a “staycation” there’s plenty to do here at home when the weather is good.
We’re lucky enough in Aberdeen to have great parks and a super beach, and the best part is that it doesn’t have to cost a fortune.
When our own kids were small we loved to pack a picnic and head off out.
The children loved the freedom of being able to play in the wide-open spaces and we loved being able to sit and watch them.
