Willie Miller: Boss McLeish needs a chance to prove himself

Scotland manager Alex McLeish on the touchline during Scotland's match with Albania.

Saturday’s win for Scotland also showed that boss Alex McLeish deserves the chance to lead the nation in the Euro 2020 qualifiers.

I’m the first that will criticise managers if it is required but McLeish has been employed after the last two managers, Gordon Strachan and Craig Levein, got two attempts to qualify for a major tournament.

There has been so much criticism of McLeish, pictured, and this isn’t even his first attempt to qualify – this is only supposed to be the safety net.

We’ve still got the proper qualifying campaign to reach Euro 2020 and the criticism has been unbelievably negative and unfair.

My stance on Scotland bosses is that the manager should get one campaign, and if we don’t qualify then we should look for someone else.

That stance won’t change, but the criticism of McLeish has been out of order – he at least deserves one chance to qualify.

We’ve given the last two managers two chances and McLeish hasn’t had one opportunity yet.

I’m glad he found a good performance on Saturday from what is a young side.

How often do people ask where all the good young players are for Scotland? Well we had a team of them playing on Saturday.

McLeish still has a long way to go because his job is to qualify us for a major tournament.

Saturday was one step towards that and he has to be given time to get us there.
