Willie Miller: Are rivals finally catching up with Celtic?
ByWillie Miller
Celtic’s Champions League campaign is in danger of ending tomorrow night.
The Hoops take on AEK Athens in Greece with the third qualifying round tie finely poised at 1-1.
Brendan Rodgers, left, felt they dominated the first leg at Parkhead, but they haven’t taken a lead to the Greek capital.
Celtic were beaten by Hearts at Tynecastle on Saturday and it’s not shaping up to be the start they would have wanted to the season.
What is a concern for the Hoops is that they haven’t strengthened this summer.
Rangers and Hibs have brought in players as have Hearts and Aberdeen – with the Dons still looking to add more.
For Celtic, the question is why they haven’t strengthened? Why didn’t they get John McGinn?
I think there is frustration for Rodgers that they have only spent money on Odsonne Edouard.
To be defeated in their second Premiership game of the season and be on a knife-edge in Europe is not what Rodgers would have wanted – but don’t write them off yet because they do have a lot of quality. They could still progress in Europe tomorrow.
But with their rivals strengthening, Celtic will face more pressure in Scotland this season than they have in the past.
