Aberdeen’s victory against Celtic was a fantastic way to finish the season and secure second place.
It was great for the Dons to end a run of 25 games without a league win at Celtic Park.
To put to bed that run was the way to finish the season in style on what was an exciting end to the season for Scottish football in general with the battle for second.
A record like the Reds had at Parkhead can gnaw away at players. But I thought the performance was outstanding, and tactically they were also immense.
Defensively everybody played their part. Anthony O’Connor was a colossus at the back and Andrew Considine was excellent as well.
As a team it was a great performance. There were so many tactical changes and Derek McInnes had to react to them and everything he did throughout the game was spot on.
For Considine, a great servant to the club, it’s a special day for him to get the goal.
With Rangers being 3-0 down to Hibs at Easter Road early on it looked as if the battle for second was over.
But then news came through that the Gers had come back to lead 5-3, before eventually drawing 5-5.
The Dons just had to stay focused and they were immensely focused.
I know how difficult it is to go down to Celtic Park and get a victory and those players know because they’ve been on the receiving end of defeats at Parkhead.
But yesterday belongs to the players, the management and the fans who went down.
Everyone can go away and enjoy their summer knowing that the hoodoo is put to bed, and can look forward to more victories in the future.
That was the sort of performance you need at Celtic Park.
The Hoops are a very good side. You have to defend properly, be tactically astute and carry a threat going forward. And as a team you need to do that for the full 90 minutes because you know Celtic will throw everything at you late on.
Brendan Rodgers made changes with Leigh Griffiths, Scott Sinclair and Stuart Armstrong coming on.
That was when they created their best chances. As an opposition team you have to match that and Aberdeen did.
It’s been a far more difficult season to finish second because there’s been more competition. But the Reds have done it with style.
Victories like yesterday’s will give everyone a great belief. Aberdeen have struggled against Celtic and Rangers but they put that to bed.
