Readers’ letters: Politicians are quick to spoil

Prime Minister Boris Johnson
Prime Minister Boris Johnson

There are many who consider themselves to be elite, either through privilege, education, position, money, or power, who assume themselves to be untouchable, or above the law.

With the many shenanigans, and denials, and retractions, we have had in Westminster over the last few months with evidence of “working” parties, meetings, and alleged blackmail, it is my opinion that our illustrious prime minister, and many of his Cabinet  judge themselves to be in this group.

Nobody, not even the prime minister, is above the law. If anyone is proven to have  committed an offence, they should be summarily dismissed, with no compensation for  loss of office, with pension money acquired removed from the fund, and given for  private investment.

A last question. Are there any honest politicians out there? I think most are, but generally in their first year, after which some think they can “do no wrong”, and everything they say is gospel.

My opinion is that, at the end of their tenure, all they care about is being re-elected, by
making all sorts of promises to protect their privileges, expenses, and pensions.

JH.

This will be a costly year

The financial effect on people and businesses over the last few years from Covid, Brexit, climate change and Putin and Ukraine has been and will be disastrous.

We have millions living in debt and poverty, yet a 1.25% National Insurance increase in spring, domestic and business Council Tax will increase by perhaps inflation of 5%+ and energy costs are to increase.

Our tariff from Scottish Power described as “green energy” will increase by 109% this year. On top of that workers have an increase of £180+ for NI and inflation on other costs. Their interest rate on loans and mortgages will also rise. So, a family could have an increase in expenditure of £1,360+ this year and a business with 50 employees 15,000 plus 5% on their rates bill with inflation above that.

All the SNP do is spend millions on independence, £33m on net-zero and get us to pay £12,000 for changing our heating to green energy – but not the kind Scottish Power supply.

A tiny contribution to climate change.
